Introduction to ICT & The Horizon Report

The insight gained through the first lecture on the development of ICT in the classroom left me amazed and excited. I was fascinated by the way technology is advancing and the applications of technology in the classroom. I found it fascinating how the use of ICT is being used as the driver for pedagogical change and the potential for online resources, student communication, student motivation and project based learning and how it is going to evolve.  For me there was a shift in my thinking on what it means to be a classroom teacher and how I as a teacher will develop my ability to teach and embrace technology within the classroom setting.

The evolution of the use of ICT’s such as the Cloud, EBooks, Mobile Learning and Augmented Reality all hold great potential in the development of engaging students through ICT. Through further reading, The Horizons Report 2011 (http://www.nmc.org/publications/2011-horizon-report) many of these areas are discussed in detail. The main area of interest was on the use of mobile learning, gesture based learning and the development of augmented reality and its use in the classroom. The report supplies some interesting example of website that are using these forms of technology at an upper secondary and university level and how they may be implemented into learning from K-12.

Mobile Learning
The horizon report had some interesting fact on mobile learning. “According to a recent report from mobile manufacturer Ericsson, studies show that by 2015, 80% of people accessing the Internet will be doing so from mobile devices. Perhaps more important for education, Internet capable mobile devices will outnumber computers within the next year.” Horizon Report 2011
